Growth sans division model

Growing cells divide when when they double in size.

Detail Description:

Let's build a simple model of cell division driven tissue growth. 

The protocols are included with the VirtualLeaf framework. Each protocol occupies a unique revision in the mercurial source code repository, and is marked with a  mnemonic tag. Use mercurial's update command to move to the appropriate revision:

> cd virtualleaf
> hg update -r 'growing cell'

 

In 'virtualleaf/src/protocols/MyGrowthModel/mygrowthmodel.cpp, note the  one line added to the 'Mygrowthmodel::CellHouseKeeping' method.

void Mygrowthmodel::CellHouseKeeping(CellBase *c) {
  // add cell behavioral rules here
  c->EnlargeTargetArea(par->cell_expansion_rate);
}

 

This statement instructs cells to expand by the value 'cell_expansion_rate' after each relaxation cycle.

The protocols are not included in the framework build process. To build and install our 'growing cell' model type:

> cd src/protocols
> make
